Agra – Royal City of Taj Mahal

Agra city is a grand old city situated on the banks of the river Yamuna at a distance of about 200 km from Delhi. It reminds us of the old settlements of the early Aryans, the Hindu kings and the imperial glory of the mighty Mughals. This royal Mughal city can boast on an architectural and cultural splendour from the golden age of the Great Mughals. It has many historical monuments which attract thousands of tourists every day.

Agra is famous in the world for the legendary Taj Mahal which is much more than being a part of the Seven Wonders of the World, and whose architectural and aesthetic beauty remains unrivalled. The Taj Mahal has become a symbol of endless love and devotion. It has been a visual delight for viewers over the ages.

The monuments located near the Taj are equally splendid such as the Agra Fort which served as the seat of the Mughal Empire till the capital of India shifted to Delhi. The Agra Fort is an amalgamation of buildings and palaces built of thick and strong walls of red sandstones. Among the magnificent mausoleums of importance are the

Fatehpur Sikiri, Etmad-Ud-Daulah's tomb, Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, Chini ka Rauza, Dargah of Saint Salim Chisti, Mariyam Tomb etc. that epitomise the high point of Mughal architectural achievement. These were constructed to commemorate the memories of some of the great Mughals and display exquisite architecture, lattice work, inlay decorations, calligraphic representations and the typical Mughal taste for grandeur, beauty and opulence. The Jama Masjid is another one of those monuments located in the city, Mehtab Bagh across the Yamuna opposite to the Taj and Dayalbagh Temple are worth visiting.
